Through the extensive advocacy,research and grassroots activities, Janaagraha has gained a relatively intimate understanding of government, democracy and citizenship.

Based on the premise that we play our roles as citizens more effectively and fully when we are better informed, Janaagraha is focused on developing high quality awareness programmes that can equip citizens to proactively engage with issues that concern them.

The CITIZENSHIP AWARENESS PROGRAM (CAP) is the first of the training modules that Janaagraha has developed.

CITIZENSHIP AWARENESS PROGRAMME ( CAP )

Based on the belief that each individual can play a role in our democracy, the CAP was created to give citizens the knowledge, motivation and tools necessary to participate in the political process.

• Trained facilitators conduct the interactive programme with predefined small groups of corporate employees.

• Through multimedia presentations participants learn about the structure of the Union , State and Local governments, the infrastructure of service providers and the strengths and challenges of our democracy.

• Role-play and team and individual exercises reinforce key concepts and stimulate interaction between participants.

• The final module introduces tools and methods for community engagement that enable individuals to contribute to their quality of life.

• Participants become part of a growing network of committed citizens who feel a sense of ownership in their city and are empowered to shape the future of our democracy.

“In 15 years, the Citizenship Awareness Programme (CAP) will create a critical mass of enlightened citizens who will actively participate in local governance for a better quality of life in urban India .”

CAP Mission:

The Citizenship Awareness Programme is based on the belief that good citizens make good employees. CAP engages participants in an interactive manner to do the following:

• Understand how the institutions of government function.
• Clarify the role of the citizen in a democracy.
• Imbibe the values of citizenship.
• Link citizen values with corporate values.
• Showcase examples of good citizenship.
