What are cognizable and non-cognizable offences?
Offences against law are classified into two heads: (a) Cognizable and (b) Non-cognizable. Offences under the Indian Penal Code or special and other local laws in which Police Officers are authorised to arrest without warrant are cognizable. E.g.: rape, kidnapping, theft, robbery etc. Other offences are non-cognizable.
How does one know if any action has been taken on my complaint?
If the Station House Officer refuses to accept the complaint regarding a cognizable offence, the citizen must send the complaint in writing to the Deputy Commissioner of Police having jurisdiction over that Police Station.
It is the duty of the Police Officer investigating the case to keep the complainant informed regarding the progress made in the investigation at least once in three months. After completion of investigation, the investigating officer should send written information to the complainant informing him of the exact nature of the final report of the investigation in the case.
What are the duties of a Hoysala?
Hoysala is the Patrolling Mobile vehicle of Bangalore City, which works round the clock. At present, there are 51 Hoysalas.
The duties of the Hoysala include:
• Responding to calls by reaching the incident location. The incident may be eve teasing, robbery, chain snatching, dacoity, accidents, etc.
• Shifting injured persons to the hospital.
• Responding to incidents concerning drunken brawls, street quarrels, loudspeaker menace etc.
