Storm Water Drains(SWD)
You can involve yourself in the following ways:
Development in flood prone areas:
• Avoid developments of land in low-lying areas.
• All developmental works in low-lying areas should be done above flood level.
• Prevent dumping of debris and solid wastes.
• All developmental works should be done in coordinated manner.
• Storm water drain management committees should inform the concerned authority about
the encroachment near the drains and other activities such as dumping of waste materials.
• Identify land for construction of ground water recharging structures.
Solid waste disposal:
• Avoid dumping of garbage and solid waste into the Storm Water Drains.
• Develop an attitude of using dust bins to dispose garbage and solid waste.
• SWD management committees should be formed in each ward / locality and should prevent
general public from dumping garbage and solid waste and also should inform the concerned
authority about the organization responsible for the same.
• SWD management committees should create public awareness programmes.
Cross drainage (and services in drains):
• Avoid installation of private utility lines across SWD.
• Refrain from dumping household garbage and construction debris into side drains.
• Report obstructions in drains to the local engineer.
Sediment transportation:
• SWD management committees should monitor and prevent stacking of de-silted materials
in each ward / locality.
• Green development activities should be encouraged near the SWD in each ward / locality.
• Public and private entrepreneurs located near parks, play grounds and other vacant lands
can construct sediment barriers.
Flooding of low lying areas:
• SWD management committees should comprise of an emergency squad and which should
be prepared to assist the authorities in providing necessary assistance to the flood victims.
• SWD management committees should inform the concerned authority about the flood
situation.
• Ensure that flood hazards are recognized in the local community.
• Avoid construction activity in low-lying areas.
Sewage System constructed inside the drainage:
• Report unauthorized discharges into the SWD.
• Schedule and follow-up on maintenance of all major and minor sewers in the locality.
• Conduct internal audits in order to continue to improve environmental programmes.
• SWD management committees can investigate sewer complaints and initiate corrective
actions where needed.
