Public Transport

Local, public transport in Bangalore is primarily the domain of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation or BMTC. Private transport operators ply only between select areas within the city and its outskirts and hence, the BMTC is the sole public transport facility available to citizens in Bangalore. The BMTC currently deploys a fleet of 4191 buses and caters to around 35 lakh passengers.
In recent times, the BMTC has brought about several improvements in passenger comfort & safety to cope with the rising number of passengers. These include larger vestibule buses, automatic doors on many buses, "limited stop" buses for shorter route times, introducing new "Volvo" buses on select routes as well as introducing several special bus routes which include special ladies only buses, "mall specials" for shoppers & dedicated hospital buses meant to ferry the infirm to hospitals around the city.
