Which is the relevant agency for building & maintaining bus stops?
The onus of maintaining bus stops rests with the BMP or Bangalore Mahanagara Palike. Only main bus stands and depots fall under the responsibility of the BMTC. However, it is the responsibility of the BMTC to display road maps, bus timings, bus stops & bus numbers on buses and in bus shelters.
What is the procedure to request the authorities to start a new bus route?
All requests for new bus routes should be addressed to the Chief Traffic Manager at the BMTC.
What is the solution to the rash driving by bus drivers, and their haphazard parking at bus shelters?
Errant drivers could be given strict punishments ranging from expulsion to legal proceedings depending on the severity of the offense involved in.
The process of selecting drivers must be made rigorous and transparent. New and innovative methods of training can sensitize bus drivers to the inconvenience caused by their driving. Training should ensure that only competent drivers are selected.
The current training and selection procedure of the BMTC is as under:
- Marks are awarded on the basis of best driving skills exhibited. The person awarded the highest number of marks bags the job
- There are different sorts of driving tests conducted to ensure driver capability.
- Signal knowledge is tested.
- The entire process is supervised and video graphed by an expert panel.
- The tests are conducted by two different officials.
- All the marks are maintained in a computer database, and are announced immediately after each round, ensuring that corruption does not seep in.
Irresponsible parking can partly be blamed on the users as well, as they resort to running towards the buses rather than waiting for the bus to stop at the designated spot. This can only be improved through awareness. A common reason for buses stopping randomly is that often autos and other vehicles are parked at bus stops.
Are there any punctuality monitoring systems?
What matters most for the bus passengers is the regular and punctual running of buses. To monitor and ensure punctuality in services, BMTC explored innovative technology systems.
A) Radio Frequency Technology (RF)
The BMTC monitors the punctuality of buses through Radio Frequency monitors at Kempe Gowda Bus Station. The equipment includes Transponders (tags), RF Antenna and Reader.
B) Vehicle Tracking System
BMTC has started an efficient system for tracking the buses using modern integrated solution of Global Positioning System (GPS) with Geographical Information System (GIS).
GPS receivers developed with the technical association of Bharat Electronics show the exact position of an object on the earth at any time, in any weather, anywhere with the help of satellite. This system keeps track of the buses to check whether it is running on its expected route and running on time. Currently 200 vehicles are monitored through this system.
