One of the most important functions of a City Planning Department is defining the zoning and land use regulations for the city that ensures a planned growth and development.
In defining the zoning and land use, many considerations are involved such as seamless integration of multiple housing types, commercial areas that provide neighbourhood economic growth and job opportunities, essential services, recreational spaces such as parks, well planned road circulation and connections, and carefully designed junctions etc.
A city's economic and development success, or lack of it, is dictated in large measure by the quality of its planning and enforcement of its regulations.
