Declaration of Slums
The issue of slums is a complex one, with many dimensions and many different players: the poor themselves, the middle-class, the various government agencies, the NGOs who work with the poor etc. Bangalore City today has around 750 slums. Slums are mushrooming on unused land, railway land, garbage pile-ups, inaccessible terrain, beside drains etc. The Government provides insufficient housing to the urban poor, and they cannot afford to buy land in the city.
However, they form an integral part of the service sector of the city. They are the domestic helpers, cleaners, cooks, house keepers etc. for the upper and middle classes of society in the city.
