New metro rail policy on the anvil
Union Cabinet approved a new policy to expand and regulate metro rail services in cities across India. The policy will ensure that metro projects are financially viable and cost effective vis-à-vis other mass transit options. It makes private participation mandatory for availing central assistance in new projects and mandates Transit Oriented Development along metro corridors.
United Nations (UN) grappling with urban reality
A Global panel of experts has recommended the creation of a first-ever international body called “UN Urban” to coordinate between UN agencies and partners on urban sustainability. The recommendations are part of a report to enhance the effectiveness of UN Habitat, UN’s current lead agency on urban issues. The move suggests that the United Nations is finally coming to terms with the demographic reality that the world is majority urban.
Awards for Municipal finance reforms in Rajasthan
Urban Local Bodies those have performed par excellence in executing “Accounting and Audit Reforms” in Rajasthan were facilitated at an Awards event held by Janaagraha in collaboration with the Government of Rajasthan.
