
Janaagraha and JanaUSP are sister organisations committed to working on a City Systems Strategy for change. Tender SURE (Specifications for Urban Utilities & Road Execution is an initiative of Jana USP that epitomises this approach. This reforms initiative was officially launched with its first completed project in Bangalore.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the St Mark’s Road and Vittal Mallya Hospital Road which are upgraded as per Tender SURE standards on June 20, 2015.
The St Mark’s Road which is 0.9 km long was developed at a cost of Rs 10.78 crores, while the 0.6 km long Vittal Mallya road was developed at the cost of Rs 6.70 crores. The roads are designed to have a uniform vehicular travel lane that allows for continuous traffic movement with designated street parking. The design ensured ample footpath along the entire stretch of the road.
The Tender SURE standards, aim in making the road more durable, ease pedestrian movement, ensure free flow of traffic and avoid unnecessary road cuttings by various utility agencies.
The St Mark’s road has footpaths that are in average 4 to 5 metres wide, 10 parking bays, one bus bay, 56 LED street lights and a cycle lane. The Vittal Mallya Road has footpath with an average width of 3.5 to 5 metres, 7 parking bays, one bus bay, 17 LED street lights and a cycle lane.
A total of 12 roads are being developed under two phases of the Tender SURE project.
Swati Ramanathan, the Chairperson of Jana Urban Space Foundation who spearheaded the Tender SURE project was felicitated by the Chief Minister.
