Greetings for the new year 2017!

I am delighted to update you on what we were up to in December 2016. On the 8th of December, we celebrated our 15th Foundation Day with our trustees and staff. Some of you may recall that Janaagraha was launched on the same day in 2001 as a movement for citizen participation in our cities. From then to now has been an incredible journey that has seen us evolve to a centre for citizenship and democracy. Thank you for being a fellow traveller in this journey!

This month, we also submitted the Citizen’s Budget for Bengaluru Report to the Mayor and Commissioner of the BBMP. The Citizens’ Budget was a culmination of the 3 month online and on-ground campaigning which saw a Budget Bus travel across 1500 km of Bengaluru, making 212 stops and collecting 71325 inputs from citizens on where they would like to see the BBMP spend monies in their neighourhoods and towards what specific purpose.

We are now closely engaging with the BBMP on having these inputs considered in their Budget 2017-18.

Meanwhile, our Community Policing program has been quietly mobilising thousands of citizens through activities scheduled for the Crime Prevention Month.

In another major highlight, the I Change My City platform notched up its 1 millionth user! The Swachhata app, the official mobile app of the Swachh Bharat Mission in cities, built by the I Change My City team has witnessed record downloads and registrations in the run up to Swachh Survekshan. We believe the intersection of civic technology and active citizenship can truly transform the state of citizen participation in our cities.

Do read on and let us know what you think. We look forward to hearing from you.
