Bala Janaagraha ImpactEvaluation Report2017-18

This report presents the findings of the Bala Janaagraha Impact Evaluation for the academic year 2017-18. Initiated by the Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy in 2002, the Bala Janaagraha program focuses on civic education, aiming to shape today’s children into informed, responsible, and active citizens, particularly in addressing local civic issues. During the 2017-18 academic year, the program engaged 24,566 students across 392 schools in 11 Indian cities, primarily with Grade 8 students from various school types. A comprehensive evaluation, including pre- and post-surveys on civic literacy, behaviors, and attitudes, was conducted among 1318 Bala Janaagraha students and 976 students who had not participated, serving as a control sample. The report underscores the growing evidence supporting the positive impact of civic education in schools on encouraging active citizenship, addressing India’s civic challenges, and fostering engagement in local governance and problem-solving.
