Sustainable bus transport financing: India

Amid India’s rapid urbanization, with cities projected to accommodate 41% of the population by 2030, the challenges of private vehicle dominance and environmental concerns have escalated. Public bus transportation is pivotal, serving 70 million daily commuters through approximately 1.7 lakh* buses within India’s 1.6 million registered buses. To address the pressing need for sustainable funding, the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation commissioned JCCD for a study on “Sustainable Financing of Public Bus Transportation in India”. This study explores funding requirements by analyzing the procurement and financial needs of five State Transport Units (STUs) over the next decade. By scrutinizing STUs’ financial health, existing funding sources, and support mechanisms, the study furnishes recommendations for a sustainable funding framework to fortify India’s public bus transportation network.
